I was reading on a longrifle building site about gun varnishes and finishes and the author says shellac was not common until later in Europe (late 1600's). I thought that the English longbows in the 1500's used a mixture of shellac, turpentine and a linseed oil based sealant in something called a French polish. . Anybody have good historical facts of the mixture and what is used today? The experiments I made with it results in glazing or cracks in the finish.
