As stated, I am looking for some advice on using a chunk of rail road track as an anvil. There is a large stack of tracks down the road from my house that has been there for three months now. But, that might not be too legal so I might just buy a small chunk (often cheap). As is, I have use of a cheap-o chinese fully cast iron 40 something pound. But, that's at a friend's home and with my new forge completed I would like my own anvil.
So, taking into consideration that I like to use 2 pound hammers and therefore need 40 pounds of anvil, I would need 40 pounds of track. The thing is, the longer the track the heavier it is. Does that end up defeating the purpose of having 40 pounds? As in, sure I'd have 40 pounds, but the track would be pretty long. Wouldn't that make all the extra weight useless?
As examples, here are some considerations. Also note that I cannot afford a true anvil, hence why I am looking to go this route.
Would the longer length, therefore making it heavier, make it so that the 60 pound anvil will behave the same as the 22 pounder?
