Here's some pictures of some personal finds.  I used these as examples for replication in my projects.

Top row 2nd and 3rd from left are hide scrapers.  The second one was hafted.  Bottom row on left is more of a thumb scraper.  The one on the right was used as a butcher tool.  But I included it because I've seen these used as scrapers too. 



Left one is a hafted scraper prolly used on hides.  There was a graver tip that broke off on this one.  The one on the right is a unifacial square ended knife that saw use as a scraper as well.



Here's a view of the working edge of the hafted scraper pictured above.



A couple large scrapers.  Just to show that pretty much anything that works, works.  The right one was made on a square cobble.  One square edge was removed by an overshot.  It was that edge that was retouched for use as a scraper.

Steve, you betcha! I'll post'em up later today or tomorrow. Getting ready for an upcoming garage sale. I like goin' to'em, but hate doin'em!

Conner, two important things to remember about using scrapers, or ANY stone tools. ESPECIALLY those that are not hafted:

1. ABRAID OR BATTER/DULL ANY EDGES THAT COME IN CONTACT WITH YOUR HANDS! Hours of hard use will cut/wear into your skin causing discomfort and or open wounds that bleed. You can even cut yourself without knowing it. A dangerous thing to happen when working raw hides and/or bone.

2. The better they fit your hand, the easier they are to use. So, if you need a large one, go ahead. I don't find many large scrapers. The ones I do find are typically not suited for refining into nicer points or knives. I think the reason is, is that after use as a scraper, if the stone was large enough and of sufficient charactoristics, it was recylced. So don't think you're being a sissy by not using that tiny thumbscraper to cut a 2 inch diameter deer antler.

Here is a Left Hand view of the hafted scraper that is one of the white ones pictured above.  It is the one that is on the left.  In this photo, the working edge is on the left.  It prolly has a little life left in it.  I prefer a sharper edge for what I do.



Here is a view of the hafted scraper pictured in the middle of the top row, 1st picture.  In this photo, the working edge is on the left.  The edge is dull from use.



Here is one I photographed after finding it.  I actually just photographed it then left it where I found it.  This edge is still pretty sharp.



This photo shows one of my experiments.  Actually, the results.  The bottom row are just a few of the several authentic Sequential Flake Knives found by me.  The top two are Sequential Flake Knives made by me using all abo tools.  My thought being that many of the scrapers I find are actually worn out tools used as scrapers.  (Thanks to Tony Baker for putting that thought in my head!)  The one on the right in the top row saw some use.  I used it to cut meat, de-flesh and saw bone and other tasks requiring a sharp tool around camp.  It was great for cutting meat and defleshing bone.  The one on the left, I used extensivley for just about everything I could think of.  The goal was to use it to exhaustion.  What I learned was that pretty much as long as the cutting edge could be maintained in such a way that the dorsal flake scar intersected with the ventral flake scar at a point where the ventral edge was on a downward angle, as it would be on a ripple, you could maintain a sharp edge.  Once the intersecting edges met on a flat ventral surface, the tool became much less effective.



Here is a left side view of the smaller of the two top Sequential Flake Knives.  The working edge originally came to a point.  But repeated sharpenings reduced it down to what is now known as a scraper.  This photo also illustrates a good relation of the ventral angle to the dorsal angle.  A slightly steeper angle would be better.  But for what I was using it for, it worked well.  I would imagine that if it were effective for defleshing bones, it may do as well on hides.  But that is out of my expertise.  Perhaps Quills can comment on that.



This is what this type of "scraper" looks like before it is worn down from repeated sharpenings.  In this case, it's in a knife form.  But, will eventually end up as an exhausted scraper, unless I knap it into a point first.



When wanting to make tools for a certain project, it pays to look at as many different tool types as you can.  And pick out what's best for what you're doing and try them out.

Another thing.  I liked using the Sequential Flake Knives because of the "thumbrest."  It really does make a difference opposed to a regular scraper.  The thumbrest provides either a better purchase on the tool itself if using it in the hand, or as a nice hafting-stop if you decide to haft it.
