World Atlatl Day Last year we held the first World Atlatl Day which turned out to be a huge success. We had, all totaled, 230 participants in 11 states and 6 countries. 43 Teams were also organized. Many requested that the event be held again this year, so in that vein, I will repost the rules to refresh everyone's memory.

1. World Atlatl Day will be set for June 2nd (first Saturday in June).

2. Teams of 3 throwers on a flight, using an ISAC target with an ISAC score sheet.

3. Throwing distances will be measured at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 meters. Competitors will each have a turn throwing from each distance and then go through the rotations a second time. (One entry per team, but an individual may shoot on more than one team.)

4. Each competitor's scores will be added up for their final score. All the final scores will be added together to make the Team total score.

5. Options for team roster can be one of the following:
* all men
* all women
* all youth
* mixed with any combination

6. Scores will be e-mailed to atlatldart1@gmail.com to be tabulated and the final placement of Teams will be posted on Paleoplanet, in upcoming newsletters (WAA Atlatl, NYAA, Texas Atlatl etc.) and in private e-mails to the host who sent the scores in.

If you also want to hold ISAC competitions on the same day, you still must list it as an event with the Secretary for the WAA for your ISAC scores to count.

So far, I have received notices of challenges for: California vs New York, New York vs Pennsylvania, Texas vs Wyoming and have confirmations from the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Texas, Connecticut and from the countries of the UK and France to participate.

Last year's Team winner was Pennsylvania, with New York coming in 2nd and Ohio placed 3rd.
Remember, this is about friends getting together and having a good time and knowing that other people around the world with the same love for the sport are all doing the same thing that we are doing - tossing sticks and laughing. You do not have to be on a team to participate on the day. Lets see if we can beat 230 people throwing this year.

If anyone would like to include pictures taken at your event, I would happy to include as many as possible in the newsletters and publicity. Besides I think we would all enjoy seeing the fun your had. I would gladly look at Russell Richards and Roy from Texas in their underwear again or what ever anyone comes up with.

We had a great turnout last year but the vast distance of 25 and 30 meters made it virtually impossible for the majority to score. Especially when we are trying to get new throwers involved. Any thoughts to a different format that would be new thrower friendly?

CtAtlatl - Ohio had also complained about the distance of 30 meters. My thought was that 30 meters would give a challenge to some of the stronger throwers, but the 10 meters would give a little advantage to some of the weaker throwers. I myself can not hit at 30 yet we have several who participate in the NYAA competitions which require a throw at 30. Can we get some input/thoughts from others on this?

it's fine, even experienced throwers can't routinely score at thrity metres, it adds a nice random element. At our event a new thrower hit at thirty (or twenty five) and missed at every other distance.

I don't mind the 30m distance for myself but some women and children may be at a severe disadvantage at that range. If no one minds and it is all for fun, no problem. But if we start keeping meticulous records then it seems kind of unfair. Varying distances seems to be the logical contest so...Maybe there should be a vote to see if we should squeeze in the dynamic range of the contest a little shorter or not. It would be interesting to hear more thoughts on this from all categories of throwers.

Dear friends,
If it is possible this year I intend to enter into practice the following inner procedure for the 2012winner in Pernik, which is basically- for the winner 3kg of fresh pork meat.
According to me the winner will really bring home the bacon .

And, of course- the winner will spread the meat accordingly between the other participants according to their results. I hope there will be not hungry.

After taking into consideration all the comments on Paleo, WAA Facebook site and personal correspondence, I think we will leave the rules as they stand for the WAD. It is all in fun and there are so many other games and competitions for people to throw in that I do not think anyone should feel discouraged at having problems with this one particular game distance.

It is fun to be part of it anyway.

I received an e-mail from the SALT group (Study of Lifeways and Technologies) and they will be fielding teams to represent the state of Arizona for World Atlatl Day. Wonderful to be adding yet another new state to our list.

Got an e-mail from Ken McIntosh, from Flagstaff, Arizona. The Doney Park Atlatl Team from Flagstaff will be hosting a World Atlatl Day event also. Very nice that Arizona is able to put on two events this year.
I have not heard of too many Team Challenges yet. We are getting closer to the date so remember if you are having ISAC competitions that day too, that you have to send the information into the WAA secretary per usual to have them count.
