Some years ago this topic came up on one of the archery message boards .

The question posed was from which # bow is most efficient in arrow cast if the arrow weight is 10 grains per pound of draw weight ? I think to be fair the bow design was the same for all three poundages .

All other things equal, to include set draw length and design, the cast will be equal between and draw weight.

Once I was making some paleo mulch from a stick and after many hours was astonished to find myself holding a bow.

Although the arrows should all be released at the same speed if the three bows are of the same quality, the heavier arrows should have extra inertia to withstand air resistance and so will travel further. Interesting if anyone has done tests to put numbers on this.

Generally lighter bows do better with lighter arrows, heavier bows with heavier arrows. There is an improvement in arrow speed and thus distance as arrow weight reduces, up to a point. After this point is reached reducing arrow weight gives no improvement in arrow speed as the limiting factor becomes the mass and speed of the bow limbs and string rather than the mass of the arrow itself. Each bow will have it's optimum arrow weight in terms of speed/cast. So a well made efficient bow of 30# might do better with less than 10g/# and a well made efficient 80# bow might do better with more.
Personally I think it would be a race between the 50# and 80# bows and in terms of cast would be decided only by which bow is best tuned to that particular arrow not only in weight but also in spine.

Another factor is that the heavier and larger diameter arrows have to push more air out of the way. I guess somebody needs to make three bows and three arrows!

My answer included the fact that the arrow weight remains at 10g/#. If all the bows and their arrows were equally well made the one that performs the best would be the one closest to it's optimum most efficient almost dry-fire arrow weight. The fastest arrow is what it boils down to.
A lighter bow may do better if the arrow were lighter than this, so I would expect the heavier bow to perform better. The flight records show some very impressive distances for the lighter bows but the distance records for the heavier bows are greater.

Cheers Mark This is where we disagree. I think that for any given design of bow eg self elb of 28in DL and that shoots an arrow of 10gpp the same speed ceiling tends to be reached regardless of the bow drawweight. In the above case it's around 170fps and for a laminated elb maybe 180 etc. David

IMO, lower # will cast arrow at the same speed as higher # will be true for flat bow construction (two bows have the same thickness).
But for D bow, the higher # should cast faster arrow as the limb mass per # will be less.

As Mark suggests a more interesting question; which bow is most suited to the arbitrary 10 grains per pound arrow weight, or what is the optimum arrow weight for each of the various bows?
The best distances are not obtained from any bow with an arbitrarily decided arrow weight.

In most cases, I would think, you're better off with a heavy arrow and a heavy bow. The arrow's momentum carries more force and will be less effected by air friction... but even then, by how much? It seems to me, that the whole reason you need a heavier bow for hunting is because you need a heavier arrow to carry the momentum into the target. But I may be wrong.

I just got back from testing out some bows I made for my grandson, I went to a cloutshoot, I was shooting 400 grains from a 40# bow and hitting the 185 mark with ease, when I cranked it back to 28" I could hit 220 yards, about the same I would expect from a heavier bow shooting 10 grains perpound.

But Badger, thats not a fair test. When you cranked it back to 28 unches as you say, I assume you were drawing that 40 lbs at a shorter draw length. Like I mentioned in my post about ten gpp not being efficient, you must take into account power stroke as well. You need to have bows of the same draw length to be consistent.

I bet you that if you had a line of people all with 10 GPP, same draw length, same design of bow, they would all shoot identical distances, despite the draw weight they are shooting. That being said, I dont understand why you said you would expect the same results from a heavier bow with 10 gpp?

The bow was 40#@28", I was hitting the 185yds at my 26" draw. So 10 grains per pound @28". Thats where I test bows, I shoot bows for target, hunting etc at about 26 1/2. I fully realize power stroke needs to be taken into account, thats why I cranked it back to 28 to see what it would do.
