Have to start this topic here too. Had started at PA forum because like to make indian short bows and like to make authentic bows too. (Not just that but this is an important thing for me)

So I ve made this bow (some others too) and some more experted guy in indian bows than like me sad, it is a very good bow but the originals had deflexed tip.
Looking for pics in the last three years and saw few thousand bow pics shure. I could tell from most of tham what is the correct braced profile but there are several bow which give up the question for me.
Now start a Topic with the same title like here and two guy react for that. They say all of this bows was deflexed tips .

This all thing is very strange for me, because if looking at some of this bows from the "other side" they have a very simillar design like semitic bows.
Not speak about gull wing bows because they are clear for me.

Speak obout this kind of bows

and on the last pic the second man from right could shoot a bow like that on the two pics I ve posted before?

These paintings are quite accurate. A pawnee is the top portrait, then some Dakota (not lakota) and a Dakota chasing a Sauk.

You'll see the reflexed tips there. Bows are not the same every time in a nation, this is a misconception, they range from flat bows tapered from the center, to double curve reflexes, and sinew backed composites.

U speaking about gull wing type double curve bows. But I ve post som different pics here. May on PA forum the question is not so clear.

But I'm intersted the bow type at he black background pic. Your examples are all gull wing bows and I ve made some of this kind bows Dakota and Lakota too. Think I know tham enough but this others gave up the question for me.

If they have a deflexed tip, than this bows are the same like the african bows and this kind of bow used in Norway etc. so this form used in the half world for several thousand years.....
Here in Europe I know the last example as Wasenaar bow, posted here by Jur. But in some part of Africa it is in use today.

Yeah, I don't think I understood. But unless you see the features of the back and belly that bow in the middle might have been strung backwards as is common in alot of museum settings.

I've seen a lot of nice old bows strung backwards in museums (where they should know better!), but these are definitely two different bow types. The deflexed tipped design is (IMO) probably very ancient, with examples found around the world. It seems to often occur as a way of making a bow from second-rate wood, or in a desert climate where all woods are more brittle.

Obviously, bending the tips is more work than making a straight-profiled bow...the idea seems to be that the deflexed tips automatically add some inches to the draw length, thus achieving a longer draw with less wood strain. I made a few Egyptian-style deflexed bow replicas, and the cast is not as bad as one might think. They are certainly capable (at 50#) of taking large game.

Nice examples of short reflex bows with deflex handles. Much more stable to shoot I think than one with a radically set back handle, like the one in the picture of the seated man with the unstrung bow.
