These are great sounding instruments. I have only heard them, but never actually saw one.

Never heard of one, but now you have me curious.
I'll have to do a google search and see what they are (I can guess....) T |

Dulcian = early bassoon. Only one key, and like a modern bassoon the whole tube is shaped like a 'U'. I've not made one, but they do sound cool...

I forgot about this! I worked with a guy some years ago who was a concert level bassoon player. He and I were talking about music and I told him that I made
flutes. He was interested in making flutes and so we got together at my workshop one Saturday. We were using this local introduced species: Arundo donax to
make the flutes. Knowing that I used Arundo for flutes, Chris (my friend) brought some basson reeds he had made using arundo cane. They were very cool looking
little things. He gave me one to have (it's around here somewhere!). Anyway, to make a long story short, after messing around with a flute or two, we
decided to make a primitive bassoon. We took a larger tube and attached a smaller one with a mouthpiece using smaller tubes of cane and pine pitch adhesive to
join the pieces. Chris attached one of his reeds to the mouthpiece and was able to actually play the thing. It wasn't really in tune with anything, but he
was making some really cool sounds with it. Looking at these Dulcians...I'd say that what we put together that day was basically this instrument! I never
heard of that name though.
That was about 6 years ago now. I wish I had taken some photos that day. If and when I find the bassoon reed he gave me I'll take some pics and post it. Tom |
