i'm in san fran for a couple of weeks before flying home to australia. is there any rock to be found in the region here? i would like to get some and take
it home with me so i can start having a go at this knapping thing. we don't have much in the way of knappable rock at home so it would be great to get some
here. we are going out to yosemite on the weekend. any rock on the way? thanks from a newbie.

Sorry, I don't know of any knappable rock near SF. Were I in your position I'd rent a car, head east on I80 to California Hwy 395 (185 miles), then north about 300miles to Oregon Hwy 20 then west about 30 miles to Glass Buttes (milepost 73.5 Ibelieve). You can spend a hour or so and get a couple hundred lbs of midnight lace obsidian or a couple of hours and get a variety - mahogany, rainbow, silversheen are all relatively easy to come by. |

you can knapp opal. also you can knapp jasper if you heat treat it first
