I immeadiately started a bow out of one of the slit staves. It is less than 2 weeks old and I may finish tillering it tonight. It is based on Tim Baker's elogated Andaman-Holmegaard design.

Spliting elm and making bows. |

Picked up a large elm log last week and one smaller timber. The timber is over 90" long and I'll use it later for a warbow. The log I split into 4
staves each over 80"L and 3"W.

timo didn't you made a similar designed bow, with slightly wider limbs not too long ago? I thought it was painted with black and gold on the back, and sure
looked purdy.
I guess this one won't dissapoint me either looking forward to your warbow! Nick |

"Looks like my bench with the beer bottle tops. Bowyers inspiration i call it. " For some odd reason beer and bowyery goes hand in hand. I can't
explain it but a few ales are just as essential as any tool in the box. LOL.
Nick. Yes I've made alot of bows in this design, as the Holmie is my alltime favorite. However the limbs on this one are about 1/4" narrower than my norm and the tips about the same. Thanks everyone! On this thread I'll hack out the other staves as well. But each bow will be different as I can not stand making exact duplicates. The wood will telll you what to do, if one listens. Again a few good ales seems to help in that area. |

I'll also show such arcane knowledge, like heat treating only the handle and outer limbs. And how to remove a nasty dogleg from an improperly stored stave.

Thimo, That is some cooperative Elm. All the stuff I harvested could only be split with the chain saw..I used to dye them that same color too! I love it! Rich |

Richard, it is a real bastard too split. My secret, if you look at the pic is the machetee.. I split with wedges for about 10-12" at a time then sepperate
the "clinging" fibers with the machetee., And contininue on down till finished.

Beer and bows are most welcome together. There is nothing as therapeutic as slowly scraping a bow to tiller with a beer after work or school.
That Andaman-Holmie is particularly elegant, yet still thick and looks very powerful. |

Thanks guys!!!
Well for the past 2 hours I've been working on the warbow stave. What a blast!!!! It's been almost a year since my last warbow build. So be ready for many pics. Also been making another elongated Andaman-Holmie that I wish to complete as a flight bow. And oh yes the green bow is going to be shown soon braced, drawn ect..... |

You could try imageshack while photobucket isn't working. No need for a username and all.

What i find best when splitting elm is to bring a 6ft3 mate along with a really big hammer
He realy does love that hammer too.. |
