I love every piece of Texas rock I've struck a flake off of so far in my short short knapping life! There is some rock that comes close, Fort Payne primo is fine arse rock too... BUT!! TEXAS is my Favorite! Its hard yet flakes like a dream, when a flake comes off the rock you can feel it in you ears. Its awesome... hey Curtis I gotta come to Louisiana next week I might sneak off and come see ya if the wife reads that its strictly plutonical LMAO!! Steve already thinks im stalking him !!! MUAHAHAHAH Ill bring me tools!!!

The stuff flakes like a DREAM when heated right. Close second is Carter Cave, but it's harder to come by.

LOL I love flint river too!! its in the top 5 of favorites. I havent had the chance to work any Buffalo river. I dont live but 60 miles south of the river so I should try and get some.

I will post some pics later.. this is my first coral to knapp.. It looks freakin killer!

I like Heated rock only if its rock you have no way of working or it would bring out the colors. Otherwise I like Early archaic pieces made from raw rock. Since I make Deep South Artifact reproductions then I like using native material for the type I make. STEVE You know someone once said "its just a rock" while Woody was blanking out a killer. He stopped and said "its not just a rock, when its this big its rare and you need to protect the specimen." Since I have been knapping I can tell you that is a true fact and should be etched in everyones flintknapping guide. Big rocks, sweet rock is hard to find. Everyone has 3 inch rock, but few have 12 inch rock!

Some of the finest working rock to be found when it is good. Outstanding color and so many variations you never know what you will get. The old timers that lived in these parts were very fond of it. You sure see a lot of it in the Overstreet guide. It works well raw when high quality but heat sure brings on the glass and color. The Alibates people liked it a lot as well, as they were trading it for Kay according to some of the site reports from Oklahoma University. Mike Smyth

Posts: 14 (05/25/09 3:12 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	being very close to the river and pasco county.i would have to say pin head is for me.i heard bow hunter is looking for some large coral.iwas out this wk end in the rain found a sweet piece,about18 inches long afoot wide and 3.5 inches thick. trying to fig. out how to get it up north. would like steve to make a point out of it. heck it could be a record,i know he could kill a hog with it. I love walking creeks and picking up rock. I offer the same for you. I collect lots of Fort Payne Chert here where I live in North Alabama. Or we could do a trade. I will sell some Fort Payne, if anyone is interested just PM me. I accept paypal. Its not all primo glossy but if heated it gets quite a bit better than raw. 2.00 a pound for spalls of 4-6 inches. I spall it out as I collect it to minimize cracks.
