How do you do inlays?

Posts: 2 (02/19/09 8:25 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : leather, sheath, inlay, question I have seen quite a few knife sheaths and some pouches that have inlays on them (this and this are examples of what I'm talking about) and I'm not quite sure how you would go about that. I'm certainly not very good at leatherwork yet, but it's something I'm curious to try. I've been trying to figure out how it's done, and I came up with various theories--beveling the area for the inlay so the edges of the second material can be sunken down and stitched in, carving out the area for the inlay, cutting out the area for the inlay and using a thin piece of leather as a backing, cutting out the area for the inlay and using no backing. Posts: 549 (02/19/09 5:22 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	It's probably a per-person thing, as I use different methods depending on what I'm working with. If I'm using fish skin as an inlay, I glue the fish skin to a backing of kip (thin leather). If a sheath, I cut the fish skin to the full size of the sheath. Then I cut the outer leather and wet it. Wet leather cuts much more easily than dry leather. I cut out the holes in the pattern I want and let it dry off. I match the outer (lets call it a frame) over the fish skin and glue it in place. Then I stitch it in place. That gives me the front of the sheath. Then I just make the rest of the sheath as normal. If using snake skin or shark or ray, I usually just back it with suede as they are pretty strong anyway. It's not really an inlay, more an overlay of a leather frame. Posts: 91 (02/21/09 7:14 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I'm using buckskin, so it might be different, but I just sew a different color of hide or different type of hide behind the cut out, as in the heart cutouts on this bag. I've also used beaver tail skin and I've seen wool used, but I think you'd want another layer of leather stitched on behind the wool.
