This is not specifically Paleo related, but I think it would be of enough interest to our membership that it's worth posting. I'll copy it to the
"Upcoming Events" forum as well.
SolWest this year will be July 25-27 (Fri-Sun). www.SolWest.org While the focus is on renewable energy (solar (passive and PV), hydro, wind, etc.), there will also be classes on foraging and wine making, living off-grid, making biodiesel, biomimicry, starting & managing a local currency, and tons of other topics that are at least moderately to extremely relevant for the person who is looking to live more of an independent lifestyle.
Tammy and I will be presenting kids' workshops titled "Solar Heat for Kids" and "Solar Energy for Kids". In the first one we will be exploring the concept of passive solar gain and techniques for capturing the sun's heat to use. In the second class we will show how sunlight interacts with silicon to make electricity, and how this can also be used to our benefit. Target audience for both classes is about 5 to 13 years old.
The fair is in John Day, Oregon, at the Grant County Fairgrounds. There is room for camping at the fairgrounds: $15 for visitors to camp in the "orchard", free camping on open land adjacent to the fairgrounds, and free camping in the "orchard" if you volunteer at the fair. There is also an RV park at the fairgrounds, with full hookups. There are showers located in the fairground buildings, plus others in the middle of the horse arena, and some of the exhibitors will set up solar showers for public use. There is also a decent motel just a short walk from the fairgrounds, if that's more your style.
AND, to make it even MORE relevant for my PaleoPlanet brothers and sisters, anyone coming from the south or the west, or who simply wants to add on an extra "detour", can swing by GLASS BUTTE to get some obsidian! There are also some great agate and jasper digging grounds all around the area, especially in the Prineville and Paulina areas. I'm hoping to swing by the Butte (if the wife permits), so maybe I'll see some of you there.
