Kurt, What area did you find it? I think you may have found coral in the top right of the first set of pictures..?? I cant tell for sure from the pics, but the other rock is gonna have some color variation. Like caveman said, heat it...

Kurt,This particular type of cactus comes from the Southwest region of the US into Mexico.  It's called cholla and when dead and dry is as hard as most hard woods.  It makes great handles.  I don't think the cactus we have in Florida...
