Re: growing yucca (reply)
Y. filamentosa is what I see planted around here as an ornamental. It's not native here, but seems abundantly popular with folks who like to put in zero-maintenance landscaping in front of their homes. I can ocassionally be found lurking in front of yucca ...

Re: growing yucca (reply)
We have a native yucca species here in the Appalachians, Yucca filamentosa. We get about 70-85 inches of rain a year and it gets down below zero in the winter. It'll grow almost anywhere with a bit of slope or drainage.

Re: growing yucca (reply)
Prickly pear cactus used to be a common plant out on the open prairies and in parts of the Central region here in Minnesota (it was mostly eradicated because it "is harmful to cattle" and such), and we used to have some growing near the house until it was ...

MadCrow: Thanks for posting that. I've always thought I could probably plant cactus in sand to compensate for the rainfall here, but I've never done it. I'd like to plant prickly pear at some point. Dan

Re: growing yucca (reply)
John, It's pretty common as a planted ornamental here in the Rogue Valley (25 inches of rain per year), so it can obviously tolerate some wet weather. How wet, I don't know. I don't recall seeing any when I lived in Portland (80 inches per year), but ...

Re: A few Texas plants (reply)
Whatever it really is, it's a cousin of the carrot -- just like poison/water hemlock. Sometimes it's an extremely tiny (seemingly insignificant) difference in the plant's appearance that makes ALL the difference. BTW, parsley often does have a smooth stem ...

Re: A few Texas plants (reply)
It is not Hemlock. Its probably a form of Parlsey I'm guessing. There are many variations of these types of plants (especially region to region) which is what makes it dangerous with IDing them. I had an ethnobotanist friend who was pointing out two ...

Is it a Sage or a Mallow (reply)
Seen a similar looking species in the Anza Borrego Desert at the end of wash seven years ago... I believe it is a member of the SPHAERACLCEA family or Apricot Mallow S.ambigua. A similar example is S.emoryi in appearance and is found in northern Neveda so ...

Need source of split oak basket slats (topic)

Re: some unknown plants, can you help ? (reply)
Yes, snowberry and dock. I don't know what to do with snowberry, wild turkeys eat the berries in winter. I've watched flocks of them head into a snowberry patch and feast. It's all over the place here. Dock is high in tannins, especially the roots. Good ...

Re: some unknown plants, can you help ? (reply)
It's snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus). It's considered edible, but tastes terrible. In the book "Plants of the Pacific NorthWest Coast" by Pojar and Mackinnon, they mention that the tribes along the NW Coast considered them poisonous and gave them names ...
