It has been brought to my attention that Photobucket has unilaterally changed its terms of service. From what I gather, Photobucket’s free accounts will no longer support third party hosting. This is the reason for the many photos on our forum being replaced by a message from Photobucket to that effect. Apparently, they intend to go forward with this, and in the end, no links from free accounts will be left intact.
What does this mean for PaleoPlanet? Well, since way back when we were on EZBoard and I first joined, Photobucket was the recommended hosting site for posting photos on PaleoPlanet. In fact, when PP was transferred over to Yuku (their move, not our decision), Photobucket and Yuku were on such close terms that there is a Photobucket button to facilitate posting photos to our site. So, it isn’t a stretch to guess that the majority of photos posted on PaleoPlanet are hosted by Photobucket. It is probable that most people were using free Photobucket accounts, so the implications are that most of the photos on PaleoPlanet will disappear from their posts.
This situation is not limited to our forum. All across the internet, people who have used Photobucket to host photos on their discussion forums are distressed and in turmoil. Perhaps, with so much at stake, somebody will come up with or step up with a solution.
The worst thing about this situation is the potential that even fewer people will post photos on PaleoPlanet. There are other free photo hosting sites, and I hope that those generous folks who post here will continue on with those.
We are looking into changes that will allow us to host our own photos, so that in the future, we will not suffer such a catastrophe again.
I bring this to your attention to let you know, if you are using a free Photobucket account, I advise you to stop doing so, as your efforts in posting photos will be soon vaporized by Photobucket. Reportedly, Photobucket is offering third party photo hosting at a new rate of $400 per year. There may be some of you out there that don’t have a problem paying that; but, if so, I hope that instead of rewarding Photobucket for their abominable behavior, you would consider contributing funds towards rebuilding PaleoPlanet where we can be secure…. Preferably where posting photos is as easy as possible.
