Willow Grove 2017 After-Action Report
So, I made it to Willow Grove for the 2nd year in a row, having missed every single one of its previous incarnations at Oregon Ridge. As with last year, the Weather Gods were a bit non-committal but at least the storm that hammered Lousy Anna the previous Wednesday (gusts up to 100mph, rain up to 6", plus a number of tornadoes) came through Maryland mostly Thursday night into Friday morning and had lost some of its punch by then. Thus, although it was cold and damp with scattered showers, on the whole the weather was better than last year.
From what I gather as a newcomer to this event, most of the usual suspects were there. At least I saw many familiar faces from last time (with a few notable absences), plus a couple of folks I've long wanted to meet but weren't there last year, namely Steve Adams and Pete Davis. Both are even more fun to converse with in person than electronically. And I especially want to thank Abo for his wonderful cooking and sharing the results with me. Dude, next time we need to coordinate feeds so I can take you and all your crew out to eat a couple times to reciprocate for your hospitality this time.
Speaking of not going hungry, that weird Forager guy sent me home with all sorts of hand-picked (in all meanings of that term) fungi and plant bits. Some were dried, some were pickled, some were jellied, and all were and (speaking only of those few I haven't yet consumed) remain delicious. And to "garnish" this, he led me through the impact areas behind the archery and atlatl ranges while shooting at both was in progress, nose to the ground like an herbivorous bloodhound, never noticing the stray arrows and darts landing around us until I brought them to his attention But before all that, we ate bits of various weedy-looking things I'd never noticed before but which I wish I had in jars on my spice rack. We also wandered along the local creek with him picking up totally obscene bits of Q to play with and me spotting many artifacts left by 2 years of similarly insane Q knappers.
Somehow I managed to get Pete Davis to let me have what he calls a 10-minute preform but what to me is an artifact from Mars. I told him it would go in my OPP frame next to Darrell Jean's Cumberland and he didn't believe me, so here's the proof:
The dacite Dalton at the bottom center I got from somebody who's ever been seen since the calendrical point swap I got it in. But I can't remember where the nifty unattributed point to the right of Marty's Thebes came from. Perhaps Goose? Or maybe it was lagniappe from Marty. I blame Saddam Hussein's nerve gas for me not remembering, both at present and for not putting labels on these things to start with.
