well, you can make a tea of the roots, but know that it is a known carcinogen.

can be used as an air freshener. you can use the green limbs and leaves to smoke meats. kind of gives it an anise flavor.

Sassafras tea from the root bark is great, and the carcinogen bullcrap is nonsense. Anything is a carcinogen if you pack enough of it into a lab rat over a
period of time. The studies were done by feeding enough pure concentrated saffrole to rats to equal ten lifetimes of consumption by a heavy tea drinker. I
guess if you drank 120 glasses of sass tea a day for fifteen years, you might want to start worrying. I would worry more about the added chemicals, dyes,
hormones, and preservatives in the food we buy at the grocery store

I use sassafrass for a couple of things. First, you can almost always use it for a fire because it retards moisture well and can be broken in the hands easily.
Second, I also use it for its slickness. I use it for my trap triggers because it is so slick, it gives a very fast action to my snare.s triggers. Larry

i agree on hillbilly NC about the carcinogen bullcrap. they put tht out to scare people into making homemade 'free' nature consumables, so ppl will BUY
products, therefor making money. but i've dont it a lot, very good. you want a tree about 4-5 feet, so roots .5 to 2 inches. dont have to peel or anything,
just cut to fit into pot after a lil scrub off of dirt. boil for 15 minutes i'd say, or more for stronger, tho too much is bitter, if then water it down
some. i usually dont even add sweetners or anything, tasty as is. also a big note, the same roots can be used 3 or 4 times with still good tea making. try it
and good luck, kevin.

Sassafras is very useful i use it for headache by boiling it up real good drink its good for lowering your blood pressure over time, the french used to use it
to help curb hunger i think along with indian tobacco. its good for dyeing up bones for an older look to things like hairpipe bone beads. makes some nice
carvings to.

in the past small saplings were the prefered handles for brooms, and the planking for the old flat bottom boats as the wood does not rot if kept wet,

The branches make great looking hiking sticks. I have made several from sassafras.

My buddy Bruce has made bows from it. They are lower weight bows, but because of the light physical weight of the wood they have pretty good performance.

I made a retainer fence from sassafras saplings that were all over my yard. I cut them all to eyeball rough length then cross-drilled each 2X in the same spot
(made drill press jig) so the bottom would be even. Then strung them w/ galvanized fence wire and drove 2' rebar into hillside and wired fence to it and
backfilled. Since they were put in green they should last a decent length of time as there is some natural bug & rot resistance to green wood. If I get 5
years I'll be happy.

File (fee-lay) powder is made from sassafrass leaves, dried and ground. Used to thicken soups and sauces. Add near the end of cooking. The new growth in spring
smells like a mix of vanilla and orange peel.
