Posts: 34 (06/29/09 9:50 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : points, clarky, broken well i decided today i would get stuck into the 2g of rock i bought and heres what happened: the first one was looking great until a cm broke off the end and then i thought i could salvage it into a smaller point. not sure whether its the rock or not it seems to just crumble into lots of little flakes when i percussion or pressure flake it? anyone got any idea if this rock is any good? also anyone have any advice on how to stop my points breaking?

Posts: 113 (06/29/09 1:59 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	your second photo looks like a stress break, did it occur while pressure flaking? i have found that during percussion support the tips with a finger on one end and the other end in the wrist/palm with the pinky finger underneath, but also support the opposite side you are flaking from.. this way instead of your force sending shock through the point, it turns the force into a nice flake. also, isolated platforms help immensely in concentrating the force to where you want it. dont take what i say as anything more than something to try. try different methods, watch plenty of youtube videos and you will soon find something that works for you. reuben

Posts: 179 (06/29/09 2:07 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I can't tell for sure what happened there ... but I am going to guess that you were hitting it on the base and it snapped in the middle ...am I correct? A lot of my early pieces died a similar fate. The material looks like it would knap ,judging by the way it looks in the picture ... what was it called, do you know? do you have more of this material and what is the size and shape of what your starting with? I'll try to guide you in the right direction ... and again... watch some u-tube video's , they will show you how to support the piece and the angles to hit it. Rich

Posts: 180 (06/30/09 11:02 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Those are hinges and you will get them if you don't abrade the edge and also if the angle of your platform is off or flaking into a concavity. Once you have a hinge or step fracture don't compound the problem by hitting it at the same place ...look for another area to come at that spot from a different angle. That material looks like novaculite , and I would suggest trying pressure flaking on the smaller pieces ... remember to work below the centerline , abrade the edge so it doesn't crush , look for ridges and understand the angle of your platform must be less than 90 degrees and don't flake into a concave surface . That tip bulge you show happens to me too. I usually end up shortening the point at the tip to get rid of it, but some times you can get a couple of lucky hits with a small billet and can thin a bulge like that. A long pressure flake tool ( Ishi Stick ) can be used to thin a thick tip too. Thank you for showing your work. Gary Abbatte
