I was just doing some reading and some Eden's were found in SW Texas. They said the type was restricted to the Llano Estacado area. I was just wanting to
know for repro reasons. the material must've been brought in.

I think that Alibates flint and Tecovas jasper outcrop in that general area.
Save the Cro-Magnons

Alibates is found around Lake Meredith in the Alibates national Monument in the panhandle and along the Canadian River. Neither are along the LLano Estacado.
Tecovas Jasper is found considerably East of The LLano Estacdo in North Tx.

There is some flints in southwest Texas as well as some volcanic stuff but let me help out the best I can.....Just because there was flint don't mean there
still is flint and we have found Harper root bear down by Little Rock AR. So your guess is a good as any ....except the Alabates,,it might have traveled there
but it's in North East Texas....Not south West...My true guess is that it is aluvial gravel washed in.....or not...LMAO

Goose, It was probably brought in from the Edwards Plateau. Here in Grayson County,Tx , far North Tx along the Red River, most of the chert was imported from
the Edwards Plateau or from Northern Ok, Kay county and Keokuk. There are a few made from local crap in the early historic era. Interestingly , I don't
know of any Alibates here in spite of the fact it could be brought down the Red River very easily. To give you some idea of how chert traveled in the paleo
times, two weekends ago I was at the Poverty Point site in Northeast Louisiana, an archaic mound building site, which had previously been occupied by Paleo
people who brought all of their Clovis pts, Daltons, and San Patrice pts from the Edwards plateau exclusively. During the Mound building phase, 3500 years ago,
most of the points were made from Fort Payne, Dover, and Indiana gray chert. A few were made from novaculite, which came from a lot closer than the others. The
point being that the old fellows went to great lengths to get the best chert no matter how far they had to travel or trade to get it. I just want to take this
opportunity to tell you what a great job you do knapping. Your video was super. I will probably never reach your level of craftsmanship, but you're an
inspiration to work toward. Thanks for sharing your work with us. It is greatly appreciated!!!!

There is flint all across the SW part of Texas, starting with the Edwards stuff, Callahan divide materials all the way out to the big bend country. Probably
all the way out to El Paso in pockets or local areas. Most of it is low grade flints, agates and calcedonys.
The Tecovas Jasper comes primarily from the Palo Duro Canyon area and is prime rock when you can find it. Jack |

I live right on the edge of the stepped planes and my artifact collection contains artifacts made from alibates, chalcedony, tecovas jasper, hill country rootbeer, edwards plateu, rio grande cobblle, obsidian and so much rock i can't identify it's unbeleivable. My collection ranges from paleo thru mission periods. I have collected several kinds of knappable rock from just south and west of here (Odessa, TX) that does not have a name that I am aware of. |
