I believe silk and horsehair were traditionaly used. Other than that, the finest possible plant fiber cordage would be better than anything you could make out
of rawhide.

Fly line was traditionally braided with silk or horse hair like anglobow said. But it was barided using a round braid not a three strand braid. The round braid
is prety coplicated and slow untill you get a hang of it. I never round braided anything that small.
But I think that fly leaders were reverse twisted. Maybe not all were but I seen some modern replicas made like that. In the link you can see some twisted silk leaders. It says they are braided but it is pretty oveous that they are twisted. http://www1.odn.ne.jp/bambriarsilk/Phoenix%20%20silk%20line.htm I have not looked to deep in the subject but that might help. I would love to have a bambo rod with silk line but the prises are just so high. Mikael EDIT: After posting this I remembered that I read that silkworm gut was used as leaders.
