mold will grow in any unsealed flute in high humidity. most oils won't prevent it. organic oils may actually feed it. mold loves beeswax. you can use a mild bleach solution to kill it, but heating treating it will do just as good. just because it's dark doesn't mean it's black mold. the whole black mold issue and it's dangers are a bunch of hyped up crap. you have a better chance of dying in a plane crash than getting sick from any mold, unless you are mold sensitive. if you're allergic to penicillin you most likely are allergic to molds.

as far as sealing goes i use what the asian makers have used for centuries, lacquer. and yes there is a big difference in the sound after it is sealed properly. unsealed is breathy and lower in volume. sealed and polished it's crisp, clear and much louder.

i can make bamboo sound like hardwood if given enough time. if you're making flutes to sell it is cost prohibitive due to the extra time and materials. i don't sell my flutes because of this and refuse to make an airy flute that doesn't meet my standards for the stage. if for some reason i can't make it lose the hollowness it is either gifted or firewood.

they also don't get moldy after they are sealed with lacquer. it helps to prevent the inevitable splitting and solidifies the fibers by filling the air spaces. i actually stand mine up and fill the bore and let it sit a few hours, dump it out and let it cure for and week or two and repeat until it feels right to me. i thin the lacquer quite a bit for the first few soakings. you can also make a dip tank from pvc and just drop it in and leave it until it sinks. when i'm done it's close to the density of fiberglass. it also helps to prevent it from splitting if dropped.

if you wish to leave them unsealed and want to prevent mold from from growing use efficient microbes. it out competes mold and remains dormant until the conditions exist for mold growth. it will eat petroleum and organic oils though. we use it for mold treatment in disaster areas and it's food grade. you can actually grow your own once you have a bottle that costs around $22.

to help prevent it from the start, cut it to approximate lengths and knock out the nodes so there isn't any sealed chambers when it's green and give it a quick heat treat to dry it a little. you want to just get it to fade the green a bit, don't try to get it tan. and put it aside for a few months in a warm place out of the sun with plenty of air flow. storing it inside of an air conditioned room helps if you live in a humid climate.
