My daughter and her family live out in the boonys, where there are lots of sandstone outcrops, especially along the roads. Lots of loose stone that can be picked up. What I'm hoping is that someone here can tell me the best materials to use to make sandstone bowls-to hollow and shape the sandstone. I'm not sure how hard a sandstone this is-some are tough enough for building materials. This doesn't HAVE to be paleo level tools as far as I'm concern, but it does need to be hand use-NOT power tool type things. Thanks Leigh

Posts: 47 (07/30/09 4:59 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've made one gradually over the past two years by grinding a stone axe blade (celt) in the center of a thick slab of sandstone. It was unintentional (I was grinding the axe blade). But I really like the bowl now. It kind of looks like a coolamon and has a nice ring to it when I hit the side. I will try to post a picture. Haven't gotten any chunks of sandstone rock from out by the kids, I probably should fairly soon. Right now, its so hot, I'd more than likely get burned. Actually I think the sandstone out there is fairly hard. Almost to building quality. Leigh
