Thanks!
I wondered forever what these distally rounded bifaces were for, and finally got an answer from David Calame: http://www.texasarrowheads.org/index.html |

I got on Calame's (sp) site but didn't find an article about those tools. Was there something I missed? I am also wondering if those tools had much
use-wear on them. It looks like they had been reworked a few times but I would expect to see the distal edge off to the ventral side if it was for wood-working
and I can't see any polish in the photos. Do these early tools show Dalton-like attributes? Larry

Thanks for the interest. Charlie |

We just unearthed one of the finest flint adzes I have ever seen, at Cahokia. This was a dig with Boy Scouts, working on their Archaeology Merit Badge. The
adze seems to be right at the base of the plow zone. They found the adze on Tuesday, June 23, '09 and, since it's right at the base of the plow zone,
we mapped it in-situ. I hope to have some pictures of the adze for all of you to see but it may take me a while to figure out how to post the pics here. Last
year I was on a dig in Granite City Illinois where we found another adze almost as fine as the one at Cahokia. Unlike Dalton-period adzes which are usually
humped-back, Mississippian adzes are much thinner and exhibit a very sharp, slightly curved, and ground edge. Both the adzes are about 20 to 25 cm. long, about
5 to 7 cm. wide and only 1 to 1 1/2 cm thick.. Larry

Hi Larry.
How are you trying to post the images? Charlie |

It asked me to make an album, so I did. I thought I could "insert image" from that album, but that didn't work. I have never used the photobucket
thing. At Knapper-R-Us, all I have to do is select the pic I want and attach it. I'll just have to get used to this system, I guess. Larry

Larry, there is help in the tutorial section I believe. I had a helluva time learning how too.
Just get your images into photobucket, then when you get into paleoplanet, point your cursor across the icons at the top of your post and one will come up that says 'insert image from photo bucket' you copy and paste 'direct link' from photobucket. If you have your cursor over the picture you want in photobucket, a drop down box comes up and you wanna highlight and paste the one that says 'direct link' I'm not good at explaining things, but hope that is of some help. |

Nice , Larry!
From the image the distal end looks like it's seem some use (polished). I'm not used to finding such large adzes. Charlie |

I'm attaching 2 pics of another adze we found a few days ago. One of our young field archaeologists almost peed on it when he went behind a backdirt pile.
I don't have a scale in the pictures but you can see that it's about 6 or 7 inches long and about 2 to 2 1/2 inches wide. This is another fine
Mississippian adze. In one of the pics, you can see the polish on the adze. Larry
