I have about 12 of them in our yard. Are they good for anything? My husband says they are the dandelion of trees (useless annoying weed, according to him).
Can I use them for anything besides shade and giving the birds a place to nest and poop on my car? accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin'

No tree is useless, they all have their place in the overall scheme of things. For starters, hackberry fruits are edible (they were used extensively by several
NA tribes), the bark has been used for medicanal purposes and dyes, the leaves are food for several species of butterfly larvae, and the wood is excellent for
making bows.

I though Mulberry trees were the dandelion of trees! They grow along every fence where birds poop!
As stated, the fruit is edible, but probably would take a bit of work to do much with it. I have eaten them a few at a time. It does make a nice shade tree. We have one in our backyard that I am keeping pruned short. We have a hammock under it and trimmed short, the foliage is very thick providing great shade. There have been numerous pictures of some great looking bows made of the wood.

There is one Hackberry called "Sugarberry". I don't know if the sugar is from the sap or the fruit.
