Deb took the shots as we cruised down the inerstate. I bet she couldn't get that sideways shot of it in 50 more attempts,perfect timing. The Cahokia Mounds have always been one of my "must see" places in life. I have always been very fascinated with them and are one of my top 5 favourite point types to knap. I was drooling as soon as I saw the title of the post, I even went "Oooooo, Cahokia Mound Pics!!!!!" to my wife. She gave me the "Oh dear god I hope I don't have to listen to this" look as she looked for an escape route and went and hid in the other room. Don't get me wrong, she is quite good with the primitive skills stuff (got me my first knapping kit, taught me how to use an atlatl and a tomahawk kinda good) just not as big of a pre-history buff. I am curious, as there is always the debate about copper use for knapping and there is a pic with copper pressure flaker rods in your list and a lot of literature about them and many similar ones found in the area, has anyone actually put the ends under microscopes and found embedded particles of flint in them to prove it for sure? We're keeping it submerged until the glycol can be added. The glycol should be added soon. The canoe is 21 feet 9 inches long and the walls vary from about 1/2 thick at the top to 3/4 inch thick at 6" below tops of the walls to about 1 1/4 inch near the bottom. The bow and stern are much thicker, obviously. It's 23 inches wide and about 16 inches deep. We haven't seen the underside but are certain it shows the same stone tool workmanship as the inside. The canoe will be used in a new exhibit in the Museum. The Illinois State Archaeological Society donated the canoe to Cahokia. I can't wait to see it up close and personal. Larry

I wished I could get up there to see the mound site first hand.... Is there anywhere i acn get good information on the Cahokia site, on line? Or may be a book out about the whole site and the cultuer?

It's a great general read, a good take on the modern theories about the site/culture and has a lot of great "war stories" about the excavations and dig conducted at the mounds over the years. It also specifically deals with the "outposts of Cahokia" that are found throughout the Midwest.
