just wondering for an opinion poll
In a modern survival situation, what skills would you find the most usefull (Result) |

You really ought to define what you mean by "modern survival situation" as it can readily be interpreted two ways. A more strict definition of lost
somewhere for a period of time or a looser definition of living after "The Collapse."
Edited to add... Fire is the first thing one typically needs unless you are in a warm location. However, what I've learned is that making fire is the best way to interest someone into primitive skills, but cordage is the skill someone should learn first as so many other skills builds upon it. Think about it this way, in that long ago and far away, ancient tribe children watch and learn from the adults the skills they will someday need. Cordage is most likely to be the one children master first.
Teach a man to make fire and he'll be warm for the night. Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Samsquatch,
I assume you're thinking of Afghanistan... In extreme cold, perhaps fire is #1. I'm still voting for shelter, though, as good shelter can at least keep you at freezing temps but not below, then your clothes can make up the difference to keep you warmer. A fire without shelter, however, only protects one side of you, and you can freeze to death sitting next to an open fire. Besides, I doubt you'll want the Taliban to see your smoke... Dan |

I voted for "other" -- in particular, The Ability To Think Through A Problem and The Ability To Learn From Mistakes.
Really, your brain is your most valuable tool, and knowing how to use it to full advantage is your most valuable skill. It don't matter whether you can make fire using only starlight and a belt buckle if you can't figure out how to keep the fire going......
The Past is the Past, what is Done cannot be undone; While it is Good to remember the Past -- living in the Past, allowing it to rule your life, accomplishes
nothing good. I have been told only a non-Native would ever think this way.
If so, then I am proud to be "non-Native". |

Cordage contributes to fire, shelter, food acquisition.

Klaatu: I said I came to save the Earth. Helen Benson: You came to save the Earth... from us. You came to save the Earth *from* us. Klaatu: We cant risk the survival of this planet for the sake of one species. Helen Benson: What are you saying? Klaatu: If the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the Earth survives. |

Most of the crafts things you don't really need, you usually have substitutes at hand.
Trapping however (I voted that) is a skill that can't be substituted except other means of getting food. The closer you get to equator, the less important this skill is, but up here in the boreal forest it is much more important than knowing wild plants. But that said, if fishing was an option, I would choose that. Because fishing is marvelously dependable with often a great return.

I voted other since the term "modern" throws a different perspective on the poll.
Also "other" can be the need for water........fire , water , shelter , food. Just my 2 cents worth! |

When prioritizing remember that you can survive:
3 minutes without air 3 hours without shelter (for this reason, in my mind, I include fire as part of the shelter category) 3 days without water 3 weeks without food
Teach a man to make fire and he'll be warm for the night. Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

i believe fire comes first...shelters can be improvised, but without fire you cant have good water or cooked food. next would be wild eds.. notg many people
are good at this skill, and it takes a long time to get good at it. plus, you should be using the wilds now, so you get used to their flavors. weapons and
trapping would be next..

without proper MINDSET, no "skills" will save you....

Awareness, knowledge and experience of the environment you're in. Also, multitasking skills are a complete must! All the skills are a piece of cake to
learn, it's how to find what you need when you need it, being the harder part.
A fun exercise is to give yourself one hour to collect and locate as many resources as you possibly can that would help you survive. Your awareness and experience in that particular, or similar, environment is what makes or breaks you. In the mid-west and eastern U.S. I'll do this and at the end of the hour I'll have armloads of cordage materials, large and small stone blades reduced from larger sources, bowdrill AND handdrill materials, tinder, bones, feathers, etc. and located good shelter sites, water sources, areas with high animal activity, etc. With multitasking skills that can all be done in an hour. Multitasking also helps you save energy/calories. So, I think awareness and multitasking are on the top of my list..... might just fit under the "mindset" catogory. Peter |

Shelter would be first. It is necessary to keep you warm, dry, shaded, out of the weather/ wind. It would also give you a base to work from on some of the other skills that could provide nourishment. Jim |

I voted for cordage, although I really really like the multitasking comment from Peter, that would be my vote but I had to pick something! The reason I
picked this is cordage is used in part with pretty well all the other skills. You can use it to tie your shelter together, start a fire (bow drill),
make/repair clothing, snares/traps, fishing lines and nets, rope for climbing to get to those hard to reach places safely (hey if your near cliffs, great for
climbing down and getting bird eggs), rope to safely cross rivers and many, many other uses!
I am actually a thoroughly addicted flintknapper and probably spend more time on that than any other skill, however I would vote for that as the least important survival skill (handy but not neccessary!). Anyone can bash two rocks together to get a sharp edge with no skill whatsoever if they need one. As for knapping for hunting, you're probably better off learning how to make good atlatl dart shafts or arrow shafts and good fletching as they will almost negate the difference of a well knapped point to a poorly knapped point (as long as they are pointy and sharp!). Besides you will have more success snaring/trapping small game, fishing and collecting wild edibles than you ever would going after large game. On top of that there are lots of easier ways to kill stuff than shooting them! I vote for cordage as it is one of the easiest skills to learn and directly benefits almost all the other skills in your list. |

A working brain is the most important thing. Having a partial-to-non-working brain right now, I can speak from experience.

I voted "Other",
While I know all of the skills listed to be of great importance when they are needed, the ability to recognise that the need is presenting itself is not always clear. My prime skill would be "Oppotunism" so that the survivor takes/makes the best use of any oppotunity that comes his way, being adaptable I suppose. ATB Ogri the trog

Ogri, I totally agree with opportunism! It's a great way to live even when not in the woods.

Shelter is priority, but as natural shelters may be ready available, fire would be more important skill, in my opinion.

Fire ,Shelter, trapping can be difficult to impossible without cordage ,kind of a rock, paper ,scissors thing with this subject.
