Bones from domestic critters can be gotten at most any butcher shop, they sell them as soup bones or dog bones. You might even get some for free.
Or.... buy a chunk of meat that has a bone and remove it before you cook it. Or walk the ditch along a highway, another good place for deer bones, or as Otter said, in the woods they're plentiful. |

Picked these up about 100 yards from the interstate on my way home from work two or three weeks ago.
Mixture of deer and cow, found two deer and three cow skeletons in the same area.

- yes and no. They are easy to get there and the price is nice, but the bone are not top quality. I'm not exactly sure what they do to them, but I think it is boil and bleach. In any event, the bone are more brittle as a result. That is not to say they are bad, but I hate breaking bone points. But, they are a lot less expensive than my local butcher's fresh bones. If you live where you can find bones for free, that would be the best.

of course, free is always better. and, he's right, fresh natural bone is stronger. but by buying at the pet store you don't have to worry about
defleshing or bacteria. and the supply is endless. economicaly speaking, i think these are a great value. i can usually get between 5 and 10 points from a
single bone. thats .50 cents a point. i'll break as many as i want for that price. one thing you should know. always wear a mask when grinding or sanding
bone. even the sterilized ones from the store can give you a nasty lung infection.

My little brother, Glassknapper, and I found an exploded deer on the train tracks! The train must have been going at a pretty good speed cause it left quite a
trail of carnage and mutilation but we were able to collect lots of good clean bone from both sides of the track. Usaully I can spot remains along country
roads or better yet...look for the buzzards! So, honestly, there are numerous places to find quality bone for the expense of a little time and effort.

the bones from the pet stores are steamed To kill bacteria. so in a way they are cooked. however I am sure they just have to bring the whole bone..up to a
cetain temp.... then they are dried. The ones Ive seen have some dried meat..grisle ..tendons etc on them. some of them are then smoked.
For me bones are never hard to get. ask in the meat dept of the grocery stores....if you can " buy " some bones. usually they will save you some for a fee.any more all the waste etc.. that the stores do not put out on the shelf.... from the meat dept..is sold periodically to a rendering co..so most of the time..unless its a small store they will not " give " them to you free.better yet go to a locker plant in your area....they will usually definitely sell you some. U can even get hides some times...the rendering places do not take sheep hides as the wool will spoil the other stuff..so they will sometimes give away sheep hides .... if some one brings one in to be butchered. Around here on the c ountry roads..if one goes back where they saw deer carcasses in the winter time..one can usually pick up all the deer bones one would ever need. Ive run across deer carcasses in the woods to on walks...leave them outside in a secure place to weather more if they are gross.always wear a mask grinding on such bones ..any bones ....the bacteria in the picked up in the woods type bones can give you....nasty lung problems. even clean bone dust can do a number on you. I got a box of very nice elk leg bones from Eidnes furs in Idaho....they were only 2 bucks each....they are clean & bright colored. they have lots of other types of large animal bones to . They have a web site where you can view pictures of what they have. Great folks to deal with. they have a killer replica eagle wing bone for eagle bone whistles. Quills

Thanks for the info, guys!
Oh, and as far as what kind of bones I'm looking for, maybe some smaller bones for Atlatl spear/dart tips and some Atlatl spurs as well. I'd also like some bigger bones to carve knife blades/handles out of. And I've been looking for some rib bones of a larger animal (cow probably). The rib bones would have to be atleast 20" and not over 25". |

If there are any hunting clubs nearby you might want to ask where the dispose of the carcasses....that's wher i get most of mine.
Cattle farmers can usually point ya in the direction of some bones on the farm. |

Huey Tlatoani wrote: I agree with that. They are beautifull. Just a coupe of questions to Paleoarts. Those bone knives, do they actually cut? and are all those tools made with primitive technology? (hope you don´t get anoid by this question, it´s just to know how much i can improve myself using no modern tools ) Again, i love the stuff, whatever you use to make them. Cheers |

hey Trib. first off, yes, they will cut. not as sharp as steel or stone of course, but sharper than wood and fairly durable and easy to resharpen. good for
gutting and scaling fish or skinning small animals and birds. i made most of the ones pictured using modern tools, but like all my projects i first do them
using only primitive technology to see if it's possible. bone is very workable with stone tools. scraping, engraving, carving, and grinding are all viable
techniques. hope this answers your questions.

Thanks for your answers,Paleo. I too use modern tools, sometimes, for some of my proyects. I´m making an stone axe right now using just paleo technology...it´s
haaaaard, but nice at the same time. Anyway nothing close to the beauty of your tools. Love them.
Cheers mate. |
