Posts: 1582 (06/03/09 2:29 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None latey i have been wanting to make things truely primitive..but,how does one get into the right frame of to do it???for instence...if i use abo tools for chipping rock and i get into a jam i am all ways reaching for a modern tool to get me out..if i want to make a bow i all ways go for the band saw,rasp,draw knife..i really think that i need to start with my way of thinking.. so,how does one change there way of think in a modern world...i dont know maybe i am just think way too out loud..thanks john

It is good to think out loud sometimes. It makes nosy neighbors not so nosy. Do you not find you reach for modern tools less and less frequently? That being the case,don`t sweat the small stuff. A Primitive skill is a skill like any other.It must be learned. When that skill is used more frequently, other skills that have eluded you will become apparently easier. They are not any easier. You have not become more Primitive as, you always were Primitive in your heart. Kevin

Posts: 77 (06/04/09 8:27 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Personally, my biggest obstacle in the past to achieving the primitive mind set has been that good old artificial construct ..... TIME! Have to do this now so I can do the next and the next and the next. Yes, things always had to be done, but you have to do what you can while you can, without being obsessed with the future, or the past. Now is were it's at. Still got a long way to go, and it really is tricky to do when in modern surroundings.

If the question is quantity of discipline necessary to perform everything in a true paleo, then there are different levels that each person will determine based on their needs, desires, and available resources (time, materials, knowlege, and mentors). I'm more to the non-paleo side of our community/forum, but hope those that are paleo will tollerate my evil ways and take the good things I do as inspiration, and apply thier greater paleo skills to them.

This applies to some one who reenacts WW2 as well as Rogers Rangers in the French Indian war or some one who wants to go way back to the ice age. It is all a mind set and study study etc etc till it comes second nature. The more you work at your time period the easier it becomes, and you will find that you will work out ways that things you do will become easier to do and find short cuts in how to do them in that time period.

Posts: 1348 (06/04/09 8:55 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	John, I dont know if i can answer your question for you,as i think its a personal journey.Your thoughts out loud,do bring up,some thoughts ive had for many many years.I believe that to have a true primitive mind,one has to have lived a so called Primitive existence.Im not talking about a week or weekend outing,but a long term existence.I grew up in a way that many would define as Primitive today.Especially durring the summers.Ive noticed after being among em,in the cities now,that i have a different train of thought as the majority around me.Ive discussed this with others,who grew up as i did as well and they say the same.I think more modern people,over anylise and make things too complicated,when they dont need to.When i was young,i actually knew elder people who grew up in a primitive way,according to anyones definition.They grew up,in the old way,even liveing in seasonal K'ums or roundhouses.Got their food from the wild,just as their fathers and grandfathers had.I noticed,that their incite and attitudes in life were even different from mine.I had been compromised by modern ways.What i guess im trying to say is,that to have a truely primitive mind,or way of thinking,one would have to live a primitive life.Its kind of like the old adage of,you never really know how you will react to a situation untill it actually happens to you,kind of thing.I hafta admit though,that most all Primitive people and cultures,did happily take on some modern things and ways,that made life a little easier and more comfortable.We can never go back to the way it was,but we can bring what was to today,to make today a better day.

Posts: 95 (06/05/09 6:15 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I forgot to mention that in your studying there will be things that come up as " the truth and nothing but " but on further study things just dont work that way, you will have to figure these out on your own through trial and error, and someone made the error long ago and it is just repeated as the absolute truth. Like the heating of chert and dropping water on it to knap points.

Each time you start a project, go as far as you can with the "abo" tools before you have to reach for the "modern" tools -- then step back and figure out how to continue with the "abo" tools. The trick, if there is one, is to just teach yourself to use the "abo" tools by actually using them. If you have to, keep all your "modern" tools locked up - and do your "abo" projects where you'll have to go through at least two doors to get to the "modern" tools. And when you're done using the "modern" tools, put 'em back immediately; it gets tiresome, having to go from the garage into the house (or the other way around), then through the house, just to get a wood chisel or a hammer that'll be used for only a minute or two and then put back right away...... There really is nothing "wrong" with using "modern" tools to get yourself out of a jam...unless you fail to learn how to do without that "modern" tool (and even then, it still isn't "wrong" - just frustrating). But, at least you make the effort to do things in a "primitive" way, to learn how to make do with what you have at hand - just in case you need to, which is more than can be said for many people in this Modern Industrial World. The Past is the Past, what is Done cannot be undone; While it is Good to remember the Past -- living in the Past, allowing it to rule your life, accomplishes nothing good. I have been told only a non-Native would ever think this way. If so, then I am proud to be "non-Native".

Posts: 612 (06/08/09 4:26 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I like to let go of "time" and focus less on getting the project finished, and more on enjoying the process. Finding an "old" way to do something has led me to a lot of enjoyable learning. With that said, I sometimes have to remind myself that using primitive tools and techniques is an experiment--and a really fun one. Pure paleo may be a fantasy nowadays, but when you think of solving a problem as an opportunity, rather than an obstacle, you can live out that fantasy even when you're only a part-timer, so to speak. Relax, learn from others, and let nature and hands-on experience teach you what you need to know. Works for me. Blue
