I like the good stuff you never hear of like the Potato Hills Novaculite, Blue and Red Pierson, Badlands Chalcedony, etc. But as far as big material goes I
have always liked Pedernales River Ameobas because there can be some differsity of colors and patterns but is usually all about the same workablity which is
good and I like to spall out the odd shaped pieces. It gives me a challenge. I also like the bricks of Georgetown I get from the quarries because not too many
people can or are willing to work them and they can be challenging to get a decent wide point from. I don' t like almost any material that needs to be
heated because I am impatient and want to work the rock from the raw and don't like having to biface them out and then wait for them to heat treat and then
work them again. I used to like doing that but not so much anymore.

i like coastal plain ,flint river, coral and fort payne. and anything i find myself. to me , rock hunting is the most fun. theres nothing like finding a
good nodguel after you've picked up alot of worthless junk and hearing that cling when you tap it. and taken a flake to check it and knowing it will make
something. it just makes working all the more exciteing for me. like finding gold in a river. i have to go up to fort knox, kentucky next week and hope to
find a creek or somewere to look in..

As aggravating as Flint Ridge can be with the hidden cracks and inclusions, it can make some nice colorful points. I like Pedernales either cooked or raw. I
got my hands on some high ridge Burlington that was killer, but most Burlington I've had lately wasn't hittin' on much. I like rhyolite if it
decent quality and doesn't stack like a son of a gun. Raw Knife River is great & cooked coral is pretty too.
My favorite rock to knapp is one that holds together while I'm beating on it. Jim |

I got several pieces of 12 inch dasite. Problem is ...... once I get done spalling it and flaking it ....... it ends up being a thousand 3 to 6 inch flakes ....... LOL
Ask of your men only that which you are willing to do yourself.

The rock that makes the most sense

My native area rock is Onondaga and its workability is etched in my brain. Everything else gives me trouble, but I have fun trying and like Pedernales and
Flint Ridge too.

hey ryhmes If I ever get a nice supply built up of Fort Payne I will send ya some of it, its alot like Onondaga I hear.
I was thinking of selling it but In hindsight. Trades are alot more fun. I got 2 orders to fill for trades already and I will spall the rock and try and eliminate the cracks. Its all creek find stuff so cracks are common. I do get some nice pieces though. I just made a nice corner notch last night and gave it to a friend who wanted to see me make a point. He loved it |

Onondaga is very different
|
Hey Reb,
I tried a bunch of Fort Payne from Curtiss, it sawed well and the dark stuff worked well raw, the light needs heat as expected because it is not as fine grained as the dark. I am familiar with the stuff, but haven't seen any that is similar to Onondaga at all. In general, Onondaga is a heavier, denser chert with a higher silica percentage and it always works raw. In fact the black Onondaga I like the best severely degrades at 400 degrees F. so heat treating it is a NO NO because of the petroleum content that explodes with heat! I have also tried Pitkin Chert that some say is similar to Onondaga. I think all those guys are either jealous of Western New York's Onondaga or they really never tried it. I hope you get a chance to try some of the good stuff from around here or Southern Ontario. Sorry, I'm not trading it anymore for a while, some health problems again...yuck! Rhymes

Well since all I have is my Louisiana citronelle gravel, so I'll say it's my favorite. It's always a surprise because you never know what color or
texture will be under the brown exterior. I did have some really neat stuff from the Crater of Diamonds in Arkansas, unfortunately I turned it into a bunch of
gravel when I was just beginning.
