The man who owned it, got it in Canada, and it's legal, i've got the papers with it. The skin of the head has the ears, nose etc., and the skin of the legs have the feet with claws. The skin is very molted, and stiffened up, some of the hair has started to come of, and one of my dogs had it's teeth in it as well, and de-clawed part of the feet , and tore of some fur... It's a beautiful hide, fur almost silvery white, and pretty long, probably winterfur. Is it possible to try and save it? Because it's molted, i might work it in the skin if i egg it or brain it, and if i wash it before re-tanning, the color of the fur might get spoiled, and the hair might come of totally. The hide does have some weak spots, that i might have to cut around as well. I have no camera, so i can't show any photos. Is there anyone who could give me advise? I'd be very thankful.

If it is slipping you will have to set the hair first to keep it from slipping further. How well was it fleshed this will have a lot to do with hair slipping you have to get all the grease and oil off before you start to try to tan it. If you wash it and the hair is slipping the slipping will increase and might ruin the skin. Some people are only alive because there are laws against killing them.

His wife didn't like primitive stuff on the wall, so he had it in a barn for a year, than gave it to me. That's how it got all moulded. So the hair is not really slipping like when you leave a hide in a bath for de-hairing. The hair is coming of, like happens with deerfur after awhile. The hide has stiffened up, almost back to rawhide, and it's growing pretty mouldy on the skinside, and on the hairside as well; the greenish/greyish kind...I've worked with roadkills in pretty bad shape as well, but after tanning they were fine. This is something i haven't done yet though. I tan 'primitive' only, without chemicals. So if you have any advise, i'd be greatful.

This is only a suggestion but maybe a 10% clorex wipe down. That is such a waste of a beautiful fur. Some people are only alive because there are laws against killing them.

I'm also trying to get a 2nd hand freezer, so if i keep the hide frozen for awhile, and than work it, i might have a very small chance to save the fur. Yes, i agree with your opinion on the mans'wife. Yes! It'll be a real waste if i can't save the hide. It'll give me the feeling this wolf has lost its life for nothing... Do you think putting the fur in borax might help? It might kill bacteria, and might stop the moulding, might help preserving the hair. Is it possible to still tan a fur after putting it in borax for several weeks?

I life in the subtropics. It mildewed because I didn't smoke it I believe. I thought I'd lost it. The hair was not coming out, but the mildew was pretty bad. I washed it in soapy water with a teaspoon of bleach then put it in a batch of sumac leaves for not too long. It was think skinned hide. It has yet to mildew since then. It did take on a little color from the tannin though that it didn't had when I'd brain tanned it. With the hair slipping, I'm not sure if you'd want to put it in water for any length of time. Maybe washing it drying it and smoking it would help. Jan Actions speak louder than words.

This is very interesting, never heard of Sumac tanning. I'm pretty sure this skin is braintanned, like yours was. I'll sandpaper the mildew on the skinside -nothing i can do about the mildew on the furside- and hope to get rid of it all with washing with soap and bleach, (I'll use a natural dogshampoo for washing), than i'll tan it and smoke it, and hope i'll be able to save it...
