Posts: 28 (05/18/09 6:54 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None first of all these are my irons that i use to make the flutes! they are stainless steel with hardwood handles ranging from 1/8" for small minor holes, to 1/2" for large oriental blow holes! this is a picture of some of my raw bamboo ready to be made into a flute! pieces ranging from 9" long to 30" long diameters from 1/2" to 1.5" it will be fun to make all of these! these are some very basic flutes i make from right to left...a large side blown shakuhachi in E penatonic, an end blown shakuhachi in D penatonic, a side blown E harmonic minor, a side blown G# harmonic minor, a side blown 7th century japanese Kokin in Bb, a small side blown fife in D major, and last but not least in a tiny 10" side blown in the key of D harmonic minor! here is an up close and personal look at that starry night fire treatment i was talking about with Tom. this is the G# harmonic minor in the aboce picture! to think this treament is made with fire AND water! thanks for looking everyone! let me know what you think! I'll guess that you quickly singe/burn the outter rind of the bamboo with a torch until it starts to brown and then sprinkle water on??? No need to tell if it's a trade secret or something...I'm just thinking out loud! I have some bamboo scraps, I'll give it a try. I should make me a set of irons for burning the finger holes. Probably better than drilling (no splintering, right?). Great stuff Andrew. Thanks for the photos. I would like to get better at flute making. As it stands now, I can successfully coppy a "G" flute that I bought some years ago, but if I try to branch out to other keys, I completely screw up the tuning....it's maddening! Tom

Tom, ya do the starry night by sprinkling the water on the flute before you burn it. that way the water isulates the bamboo from the flame, giviing you the speckled look. I Love your flutes Andrew, what does the notch look like for your shak? ive been wanting to give one of thos a try for a while. is it like a quena or more shallow like an Anasazi?
