Sanded to 220 is all. Top row Apricot, Redwood, Pine, Pine, Weeping Willow, Pine, Pine Bottom two "take your best guess" (I'll post the answer if no one gets it in a couple of weeks) Closer view I have not seen any spoons in this "no tell em wood" I think it's amazing stuff http://legba.yuku.com/

Well, I hope not laburnum as it is very poisonous (and so are some sumacs). Not good for spoons. I'm interested in those pine spoons since we have some Stone Age spoons made out of pine here but I have never made one. I have always tought that the pine wood must taste "piney" when using them. What is your experience? Mikael

The seed and the bark are NOT to be messed with, fully seasoned wood is fine and looks great as a spoon or longbow.Its one of my all time favourite woods. So is it Rowan ash?????? Nathan

As Nathan said some plants that are known to be toxic are still used by some (like laburnum) and no direct evidence of health problems caused by using these wood for eating utensils has been reported. I still would not recommend it. Wikipedia says about sumacs that some species are toxic and others are not. Sagebrush does not sound like a good idea for spoons either: "The plant is highly allergenic to humans, and can cause dermatitis if applied to the skin of sensitive individuals. The plant's volatile oils are metabolized in the liver into toxic compounds which can cause internal blood clotting and the formation of micro-thrombi in the liver and digestive tract. Native Americans used sagebrush administered internally as a medicine to halt internal bleeding caused by battle wounds and childbirth. The plant is very toxic to internal parasites and was used to expel worms. The plants oils are toxic to the liver and digestive system of humans if taken internally, with the toxic symptoms subsiding 24-48 hours after ingesting the plant. A tea made from sagebrush was used internally and as a topical dressing to treat infections by Native Americans in the Mountain West of North America."
