but a very inresting photo. intresting to notice how fast a bow explodes into so many pieces, you didnt even have time to blink your eyes, which i thought was the bodys fastest reaction.

Good thing no splinter got you. Look at you, calm as a rock while your bow's exploding

love your form on the breaking-pic!
nice to see that arrow hovering above your knuckles it's a pitty it broke, but you should print that breaking picture 4feet wide and hang it on the wall and, uhm Tom, you might want to use the breaking picture as banner image... however this one's beautyfull aswell Nick |

Wow Griffin I have had that happen soooo many times, I have never caught it on film like that though. That is an amazingly cool picture. I sometimes wear
ballistic goggles when I pull full draw for the first couple of arrows, that's after I have pulled it on the tree a couple of hundred times. You look
completely relaxed as It blows up in your face. Commiserations on the bow though.

That bow looked great, Griffin! I always wonder about unbacked juniper bows... The europeans seem to have better luck, though. You did a lot of great work on
that bow, too!
I'm glad you got such a great breaking shot, and weren't hurt. I saved a copy, if you don't mind. I'm making a collection... Lol. Freaky timing on the photo! Seems impossible, but now I've seen several, including my own that Tim shot with my camera... Also Marc St. Louis and Ralph... One thing I really like about your explosion photo is the blur of the broken shards, presumably caused by a slightly slower shutter speed due to the overcast lighting conditions. Way to stay in the shot! Ken |

Lol so many posts. Whoo
Dutch: I actually don't shoot with my arm that high, I think the photographer snaps a bit early before I come full down into the draw. Yeah I also love the arrow in the air...hehe so cool. Nathan: Yeah I would wear goggles if I had any...but remember this was only lowpound so I wasn't very afraid. I had a feeling it could blow because of the chrysals just after first fulldraw, and Im also trying to stand still to get a good photo. Ken: Thanks, and I dont mind about the photo, spread it everywhere It was pretty amazing that it got so cool, it just happened. Manny: I usually draw my bows many many many times to fulldraw on the tree and then shooting it in. however I was in a hurry to get this one ready and had no more days free before the weekend so the nock glue hadn't set o I just took it home to oil. (cant shoot at home) I actually never had it on fulldraw more then twice or something. Richard: Thanks, I hope the person getting it will think the same. Hartung: I dont really know, I got the wood from Nidrinr who is here on the forum and I will meet him this weekend so I will be sure to ask. I wont be here this weekend because we are going to a 3d-shoot/getogether this weekend. I will bring my filmcamera and try and film some and maybe put it up somewhere. I have never done that before but im sure Ill work it out. |

That was a great bow. If we ever make a forum for fallen soldiers then this is the pic for the banner. With out a doubt this is the freekyest and best bow
break ever. To bad tho this looked like a great bow. Glad to see that you didn't get shishkabobed.

Juniper breaks like that, sooner or later. Hate to be a party-pooper, but I've witnessed too many juniper meltdowns in the past 16 years to think
otherwise. And juniper always goes with a bang, throwing chunks of bow high in the air. None of those "Dang - popped a splinter. Better go glue it
up" - saves as with other woods. I keep a healthy distance to juniper bows not backed with at least 1/8" of sinew.

I'm stunned.. First I saw the banner pic (the whole bow..), said "WOW, what a cool bow!!!", then I read what is written below, so I looked up in
the forum. That exploding picture is unbelievable. I'm glad that you were lucky enough to see the photo with your own eyes!
Sorry for your bow. |

That's a shame about the bow, but what a great picture. Probably the best documented bow exlosion in history.
I don't really think that you did anything wrong with the bow. I think that the photographer changed your reality when he took the picture. It's all the photographer's fault. |

I agree with Ichi... This sort of thing is the photographer's fault... Lol. When you see the photographer put on safety glasses, or step back a few steps
and put on a longer lens, you should know something is up...
Tuuka, glad to hear another voice of reason. Let's take his great photo and use it on the cover of a pamphlet called "Reasons You Should Put At Least A 1/8" Thick Sinew Backing On A Juniper Bow" Ken |

First of all, great picture of a very nice bow. Extraordinary exploding picture.
Tuukka, I agree with your view of juniper, and I would extend it to yew also if humidity is low enough. Here in UmeƄ, I dont build or shoot Yew or Juniper selfbows from november to may. I have limited experience of juniper, but I understand it is needs even more moisture than yew to hold together. |

Weird thing is that I have a juniper of only sapwood that has a very unhealthy bend and it holds together good.
I have shot many arrows with it. Its very low poundage tho. I have heard about the unsureness of juniper but my experience (altho limited) has told me it has very good tension capabilities. Daniel (Nidrinr) was so very kind to give me another piece with the most heartwood I have ever seen on juniper. It is extreme. I will do a longbow from it since the flatbow chrysaled in the fades it doesn't feel safe. I will give it wrappings all over like that old bow design (nydam bow?), this will prevent it from exploding into many bits. Ill try to give it bend all over and ill make it very long. |
