I was on a hike with my son and dog close to a little brook found some trees tat look like black and white ash ...Just want t make sure ..looks like the beaver around the area did quite the job shopping them down I found a least a dozen of them.Here are some pics SORRY SOME ARE A LITTLE FUZZY Last Edited By: indygoman 04/22/09 5:17 AM. Never knew beavers to chew much Elm but haven't really seen a situation where beavers were located right next to Elm. Beavers seem to chew just for the sake of chewing.

It would be American Elm and Alder for sure. Elm will work great. Looks like the tree hasn't been down long enough to start degrading.

Posts: 227 (04/21/09 10:27 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've read that the scale that covers the buds of willow are in one piece, like a hood, and in other things made from overlapping bracts. Might be useful if there are any buds to be seen on your log. The cross section didn't look exactly like elm, but it was tricky to see. Or cut a small piece off and dry it and see how light it gets. I'd tend to agree with Mimms and say that the second one is willow, but can't say for sure without seeing leaves or buds. It could be elm, but the bark doesn't look much like the species of elms we have here. Save the Cro-Magnons
