OK Ishi maniacs, here is the chance to show your prowess and win a world champion title as KING NOTCHER. I, Ray Harwood of Bakersfield, California, will be the judge and jury (and a contestant as well). Results will be confirmed by an Ishi point panel headed by Ishi lithics expert, Jim Williams. The prize is a big world champion notcher trophy. The cost of entry (pardon the pun) is one well notched Ishi point( the one that I will judge). These points will become part of the Western Lithics study collection and will be donated to a museum for research. Points should be crafted out of glass, obsidian, porcelain, or flint-like materials. Sharpen up your Ishi stick -on your marks…get set….notch!!! The winner is the one with the narrowest entry into a nice tear drop notch. Western Lithics and or Ray Harwood is not responsible for any idiots that cut themselves or get chips in their eyeball. Also I use a diamond tip scribe to sign/date points so how's that fit in the contest? thanks Emory

I want to do this contest once a year, in April -May, and publish the results on line with a photo of all the contestants Ishi points, Signing the points is an excellent suggestion. All thepoints will be well documented as to knapping technique and knapper biograghy. I will set up a special web blog site for the compition, it will be accessable at all times by all people. If there is a run-off, we will have to have an on line vote and or have 2 trophies. We will have second place certificates as well. All those that enter will get a certificate of participation and honorble mention and their photo and bio on the blog. I am setting up the web blog tonight and already have 2 entries. And Emory...no size limit!

If the goal is to replicate one of Ishi's points with the narrow entry notching style he used I think we should be limited to the type of material he had available and used in his demonstrations. Some materials lend themselves to very narrow entry notches due to their workability but they may not have been available to Ishi at the time he made these points so I don't think these could be considered valid entries. Some of the Ishi points I observed at the Pheobe Hearst Museum in Berkeley were chipped from clear antique glass which works very differently from modern glass or obsidian obtained from distance sites that Ishi certainly would not have had access to. Also, I think you should set a criteria for a certain style and size. Ishi made various point styles, do you want desert side notches or corner notches for instance? Would you accept his long, 2 and 1/2 inch X 3/4 inch demonstration points or his shorter hunting points? I hate to be picky but I think we should have a more even playing field with more specific criteria for entry. Lastly, the Ishi point I send you may be the best I been able to fabricate after a very long learning curve. Would it be possible to make a casting of the entry and send the original back to the entrant? I read somewhere that an original Ishi point sold for $25,000.00. I'm a little concerned that Ishi Point replicas might end up in the wrong place. I agree with Emory that the entrys should be intialed and dated with a diamond scribe at least. Please don't take this in the wrong way, I applaud what you are are doing and I hope to learn a lot from this and the people who contribute their works. I look forward to contributing to the contest, (I really don't expect to win anything!) and seeing the results of the judging. I hope the blog will be up and running soon. I surely expect Jim Winn or Flintknapperjimmy to take the cake! Mark
