Box Bellows? |

Hello,has anyone here built and used a Chinese or Japanese style box bellows?Would it have taken a helper to just operate the bellows or could the smith do it
alone?I'm considering trying one on a Tai Goo forgebeque charcoal forge but if i need to find someone to pump the bellows,it won't be a way to go for
me.

When someone use a boxbellow they have it at there side and it is beside the forge. there is a wall or somthing to block the eat but it up to how u set it up .

Took me a little while to figure this out. I couldn't figure out how it blew air through the forge and didn't suck it back through...

The sucking happens in the big box, it then blows the air into the small side box which travels to the forge. As the handle is pushed the flap in the big box opens and sucks air, at the same time pulling the flap in the side box shut. On the other end of the box the flap in the big box is pushed shut and this forces the air into the side box and to the forge. When the handle is pulled it just opens and closes the opposite valves, this is how you get air pushed to the forge on the push and pull stroke. Hope that helped someone. I found some plans for a very simple box bellows in this link: http://www.fastonline.org/CD3WD_40/JF/410/02-60.pdf It´s on indigenous Indonesian technology and in the chapter on blacksmithing pg. 131 are the plans, along with some other types of blowers and skin bellows.
