I found very high grade chert at one the locations listed in one of the searches you posted. I had found it before but never read it. I should have though
because it lists tons of chert bearing formations in my area to a great deal of precission. I will post pics of the stone in the topic, "How do i remove
chert from limestone". Thanks for the help!

knappingprodogy,
Call some of the quarries in your area, ask if they find "Flint or chert", most people call it flint. Call any place that digs including the landfill.

onemississipp, i went to your site near pickwic damn and picked up a few rocks, perhaps 10 -12 decent pieces, after i tried slabbing them i was heartbroken
that the good knappable rock inside the chirt wasnt plentiful. It was a learning experience and dont think I dont appriciate what you do here. Its good of you
to take the time to gather all this info up. I was wondering how you liked the material you picked up at that site. I did see the one piece you started making
the red one. I dont think I had more than 2-3 rocks that had enough nappable material in them to make a decent sized point.
I heat treated a pot full of them anyway to see what i could come up with, Im new to these boards and want to thank you again for your efforts. Looking forward to your reply. |

That's the problem with posting this stuff on the internet. I know he's trying to help, but it does more harm that good. 100 ppl. see that an area
has knappable rock, and within 3 or 4 days the resources are GONE. The next thing you know people are picking with axes in the side of a cutout on an
Interstate Hwy because someone told them it had knappable flint!
I know the original poster has nothing but the best of intentions, but we all have to think about the consequences of our intentions. Free information can be a dangerous thing. |

Hi Guys: I live in Rock Spring Ga. 15 mi so. of Chattanooga Tn. I am new to knapping but am not a stranger to geology. Since the gem and gold fields are too
far from me and I am unemployed the knappin is now my pastime. There are a lot of cherts and jaspers found here. There is a black chert/jasper that does not
have to be heat treated to knapp it. The question is where is it found? We need to map the group out and see what and where materials are found. Quartz is
knappable but may have to be treated. The Nw. area is sedimentary and holds a surprising variety of stone types as well as fossils.
please advise meerrden@comcast.net |

You are to far from the gold fields? How far are you from the gold fields ? 75 miles? One of the first big strikes in the USA was found in GA.
