I have been interested in casting a copper billet about 18 to 20 pounds about 2 to 3 inches across to use for spalling larger rock. It does need to be
copper. brass is too hard, aluminum is too light but copper is just right. Is there any way to make a crucible for that amount of copper? And do you
think I could make a temporary furnace from fire bricks and possibly use my propane weed burner as a heat source? There seems to be not a lot of info on
casting copper other than that...

I picked up these little bowl at a thirft shop for $0.99. They look like stainless steel, but there are no markings on them. I had read online that even thin
stainless steel can be used as one shot crucibles. Might they be womething else. I would guess that these are between 1/16" and 1/32".

Okay folks, this is just the way I do it. I am in no way a professional foundry guy, or even a jewelery maker. Disclaimers aside, it's a really easy way
to make easily machined simple molds that you can cast in, and don't even have to do a pour (melt directly into the mold). I bought my graphite as scrap
from some guy selling blocks of it on eBay. The pieces are about 6"x6"x1" or so, and I got about 6 of them for somewhere around $25 or so total
a few years back....

Hi everybody!
Haven't been here in a while since my old forge broke down and I have to find a new place for metal working, but I wanted to try my hands at casting.
Particularly pommels and cross guards on swords and such but also rings. I know how to do the lost wax method but I was wondering about a couple of things such
as:

1.) How hot must I get brass or copper in order to liquidize it? steel?

2.) Can it be done with a forge? If so what type of set up do I...
