As a new knapper who is making gravel as fast as a road crew, I'd like to save some money and heat my own rock since I have an abundance of burlington on
my property here in southwest Missouri.
Other than dig a hole, fill with rock, cover with soil or sand and build a fire, can anyone provide more detailed instructions or is this process simply trial
and error?

Thanks,

I am kind of new to knapping and I am having a bit of a problem.
I have watched several vidios and have tried to emulate the spall thinning methods I have seen but I keep creating steps instead of nice clean flakes.
Every once in a while I will get a good flake but the majority seem to be steps.
I am using a 1 1/8' copper bopper and am working with untreated noveculite.
Can anyone tell me what the common causes are and what to do to prevent them?
